Ingredients

For the Yoshoku Patties
  • 500 g ground beef providing richness and protein
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium carrot finely diced
  • 1 cup cooked rice binds everything together
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce adds a tangy, savory kick
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce a staple in Japanese cooking
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for sautéing and frying
  • 4 large eggs to top off the patties
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs for crispy coating
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage for serving
For Serving
  • tonkatsu sauce

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Large Bowl
  • Separate Skillet

Method

  1. Step 1: In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and diced carrot, sautéing until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Step 2: Add the ground beef to the skillet, cooking until browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season with salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Mix well and remove from heat.
  3. Step 3: In a large bowl, combine the cooked rice with the beef mixture. Mix thoroughly until everything is well incorporated.
  4. Step 4: Shape the mixture into patties, then coat each patty in breadcrumbs for a delightful crunch.
  5. Step 5: In a separate skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Fry the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Step 6: In a small bowl, beat the eggs. In the same skillet, cook the eggs sunny-side up, about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Step 7: Serve the patties on a plate, topped with the fried egg, accompanied by a generous serving of shredded cabbage, and drizzled with tonkatsu sauce.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm them in a skillet or microwave until heated through. The patties can also be frozen for up to a month.
