- Step 1: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
- Step 2: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Step 3: Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
- Step 4: In a small bowl, mix together the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. This mixture will flavor your rice beautifully.
- Step 5: After the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
- Step 6: Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat or a clean surface.
- Step 7: With wet hands, spread a thin layer of sushi rice evenly over the nori, leaving a small border at the top.
- Step 8: Add your choice of fresh fish or veggies in a line across the center of the rice.
- Step 9: Roll the sushi tightly from the bottom, using the mat to help, until you reach the exposed edge of the nori.
- Step 10: Seal the roll by wetting the edge of the nori with a little water.
- Step 11: Slice the roll into bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
Notes
Store leftover sushi wrapped tightly in plastic wrap in the refrigerator and try to eat within 24 hours for the best taste.
