Ingredients

For the Beef Donburi
  • 1 lb beef sliced thinly
  • 2 cups cooked rice fluffy and warm
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil for sautéing
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh shiso leaves chopped
  • 2 green onions sliced for garnish
  • Sesame seeds

Equipment

  • Skillet

Method

  1. Step 1: In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  2. Step 2: Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant—this should only take about 30 seconds!
  3. Step 3: Add the sliced beef and cook until browned, stirring frequently to ensure even cooking.
  4. Step 4: In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, water, and sugar until combined. Pour this mixture over the beef.
  5. Step 5: Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly and coat the beef.
  6. Step 6: Stir in the chopped shiso leaves and cook for an additional minute to let the flavors meld.
  7. Step 7: Serve the beef mixture over the warm cooked rice, making sure to drizzle some of that delicious sauce over the top.
  8. Step 8: Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for that perfect finishing touch.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of water to keep the rice moist.
