Ingredients

For the Sushi Rice
  • 2 cups sushi rice high-quality
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 1/4 cup Akazu red vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
For the Sushi Filling
  • Nori (seaweed sheets)
  • Fresh fish (such as tuna or salmon)
  • Vegetables (such as cucumber or avocado)
  • Soy sauce (for serving)
  • Pickled ginger (for serving)

Equipment

  • Rice Cooker or Pot
  • Bamboo Sushi Mat
  • Sharp Knife

Method

  1. Step 1: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well to remove excess starch.
  2. Step 2: In a rice cooker or pot, combine the rinsed rice and water. Cook according to the rice cooker’s instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the water is absorbed.
  3. Step 3: In a small bowl, mix the Akazu red vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved.
  4. Step 4: Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture while the rice is still warm. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
  5. Step 5: Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands to prevent sticking and spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a small border at the top.
  6. Step 6: Arrange slices of fresh fish and vegetables in a line across the center of the rice.
  7. Step 7: Carefully roll the sushi using the mat, applying gentle pressure to form a tight roll. Seal the edge with a little water.
  8. Step 8: Slice the roll into bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife.
  9. Step 9: Serve with soy sauce and pickled ginger on the side. Enjoy your delicious homemade sushi!

Notes

Store any leftover sushi rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Sushi is best enjoyed fresh!
